The brick, the cast-iron columns and the steel windows were the reason the owners bought the loft, so the design works around them. We cleaned the brick rather than painting it and let the steel stair stay black.
Comfort comes from the soft things: a deep leather sofa, two worn-in club chairs, layered wool rugs and table lamps on dimmers that turn the loft amber after dark.
