Layering light: the three lamps every room needs

The fastest way to make a room feel designed is not new furniture. It is three kinds of light, at three heights, on separate switches.

The three layers

  • Ambient: soft overall light, often from the ceiling or wall washers
  • Task: reading lamps, under-cabinet strips, a pendant over the table
  • Accent: picture lights, a lamp on a sideboard, light on a textured wall

Put every layer on its own switch, and every switch on a dimmer. Julian, senior designer
