The fastest way to make a room feel designed is not new furniture. It is three kinds of light, at three heights, on separate switches.
The three layers
- Ambient: soft overall light, often from the ceiling or wall washers
- Task: reading lamps, under-cabinet strips, a pendant over the table
- Accent: picture lights, a lamp on a sideboard, light on a textured wall
| Room | Ambient | Task | Accent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Wall washers | Floor lamp by the chair | Lamp on the sideboard |
| Kitchen | Recessed, dimmable | Under-cabinet strips | Pendants over the island |
| Bedroom | Ceiling, on a dimmer | Bedside lamps | Low light in the wardrobe |
Put every layer on its own switch, and every switch on a dimmer. Julian, senior designer
